Ethernet Cable Category & Distance Selector
Enter your target link speed (`1 Gbps`, `2.5 Gbps`, or `10 Gbps`) and cable run length in feet to get the exact TIA/EIA cable category and jacket spec.
Select your target speed and run length in feet, then click Get Cable Specification.
TIA-568 Ethernet Cable Standards Comparison
| Category | Max Frequency | 1 Gbps Max Distance | 2.5 Gbps Max Distance | 10 Gbps Max Distance | Best Application |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cat5e | 100 MHz | 328 ft (100 m) | 328 ft (100 m) | Not rated (short patch only) | Existing legacy in-wall residential wiring |
| Cat6 | 250 MHz | 328 ft (100 m) | 328 ft (100 m) | 180 ft (55 m) | Best value for new home & small office drops |
| Cat6a | 500 MHz | 328 ft (100 m) | 328 ft (100 m) | 328 ft (100 m) | Commercial 10G runs, high-wattage PoE++, WiFi 7 APs |
| Cat8 | 2000 MHz | 98 ft (30 m) | 98 ft (30 m) | 98 ft (30 m) (25G/40G) | Data center top-of-rack switch-to-server only (avoid for homes) |
3 Non-Negotiable Ethernet Buying Rules
- Never Buy CCA (Copper-Clad Aluminum): Cheap online cables often use aluminum wire coated in a microscopic layer of copper. CCA violates NEC fire codes, snaps easily inside punch-down keystones, and overheats dangerously under PoE+ camera/AP loads. Always demand 100% Pure Bare Copper (23 AWG or 24 AWG).
- Solid vs. Stranded Conductors: Use Solid Copper bulk cable for permanent in-wall runs terminated into keystone jacks or patch panels, and flexible Stranded Copper patch cords between wall plates and desks.
- Ignore 'Cat7' and 'Flat Cat8' Marketing: TIA/EIA never recognized Cat7 RJ45 for standard Ethernet, and ultra-thin flat 'Cat8' cables sold online frequently fail basic crosstalk certification. Stick to UL/ETL-verified Cat6 or Cat6a.
