Frontier Fiber Router Setup: Using Your Own Router With the ONT
To use your own router on Frontier Fiber (500M, 1G, 2G, or 5G), unplug the Frontier-supplied Amazon eero Pro 6E, eero Max 7, or Arris NVG468MQ and connect your new router's WAN port directly to the 10GbE RJ45 port on the Nokia FRX523 / FOX222 ONT (or the 2.5GbE port on a Frontier FCA252 MoCA adapter set to 25GW) using standard Dynamic DHCP.
- Connect straight to the ONT: You do not need to keep the Frontier eero or Sagemcom/Arris router inline unless you subscribe to legacy Frontier landline voice through an NVG468MQ.
- Use the silver 10GbE port on XGS-PON ONTs: On Nokia
FRX523andFOX222ONTs, only the silver-framed10GERJ45 port is provisioned—the four yellow 1GbE ports are disabled. - Check the FCA252 MoCA switch position: If your ONT feeds coax to a Frontier
FCA252MoCA 2.5 adapter, make sure the toggle switch is set to25GW(or1GW) and reboot after changing it. - No VLAN tag or 802.1X needed in 98% of markets: Modern Frontier XGS-PON and GPON circuits use plain untagged DHCP (Dynamic IP) and release the old MAC lease within 60 seconds of an ONT reboot.
1. Direct Ethernet Connection to the Frontier FRX523 / FOX222 ONT
Frontier Fiber installs an Optical Network Terminal (ONT) inside your garage, utility closet, or exterior slack box—most commonly the Nokia FRX523 or FOX222 (for 1G, 2G, 5G, and 7G XGS-PON tiers) or the Calix 803G / Nokia G-240G-A (for 500M/1G GPON tiers). During installation, technicians plug an Amazon eero Pro 6E, eero Max 7, TP-Link Archer AXE300, or Arris NVG468MQ into the ONT.
Unless you have residential telephone service plugged into the green Phone 1/2 RJ11 jack on an Arris NVG468MQ or Sagemcom FAST 5290, you can completely remove the Frontier router:
- Identify the active ONT port: On the Nokia
FRX523andFOX222, trace the Cat6 cable to the single silver-bordered 10GE RJ45 port (supports 100M / 1GbE / 2.5GbE / 5GbE / 10GbE NBASE-T auto-negotiation). Never move the cable to the four yellow 1G ports, which remain unprovisioned in OLT software. - Swap the WAN cable: Unplug the Ethernet cable from the Frontier eero's port and plug it directly into the
WAN / Internetport on your own router.
2. Using the Frontier FCA252 MoCA 2.5 Adapter (1GW / 25GW / LAN Switch)
If your ONT is mounted in a garage without a Cat6 Ethernet path to your living room or office, Frontier technicians use existing in-wall RG6 coaxial cable paired with two black Frontier FCA252 MoCA 2.5 adapters (one at the ONT and one in the house). These adapters work seamlessly with any third-party router—you do not need an eero or Arris router to use them.
Inspect the small physical 3-position sliding toggle switch on both FCA252 adapters:
25GW(1475–1675 MHz — Best for 1G/2G Plans): Allocates 2x100 MHz MoCA 2.5 channels so the adapter's RJ45 port negotiates at full 2.5GbE (delivering up to ~2.3 Gbps real-world throughput). Both the ONT-side and router-side FCA252 units must be set to the exact same switch position.1GW(1475–1575 MHz): Limits the MoCA link to a single 100 MHz channel (~1 Gbps ceiling); often set by technicians on 500M or 1G installs.LAN(1125–1675 MHz): Full 5-channel 2.5 Gbps mode for coax runs that do not carry legacy cable TV frequencies. Always power-cycle both FCA252 adapters for 10 seconds after flipping the toggle switch.
3. Releasing the Frontier DHCP Lease & Handling Legacy 802.1X Markets
When you unplug the Frontier eero or Arris NVG468MQ and connect your own router, Frontier's BNG (Broadband Network Gateway) may hold the previous router's DHCP lease for up to 30 minutes unless cleared. To force an immediate handoff:
- If replacing an Arris NVG468MQ: Log into
http://192.168.254.254, go to Status → Connection, click Release on the WAN DHCP IPv4 address, and immediately unplug the WAN Ethernet cable before it renews. - If replacing an eero Pro 6E / Max 7: Because the eero app has no manual DHCP Release button, unplug power from the Frontier ONT for 60 seconds while swapping the WAN cable to your new router, then power on the ONT first and your router second.
- Rare Legacy Connecticut 802.1X Exception: In 98% of Frontier markets (CA, TX, FL, IN, OH, WV), WAN is plain untagged DHCP. In select legacy Connecticut GPON neighborhoods that still enforce IEEE 802.1X authentication, clone the Arris WAN MAC address onto your new router or set the NVG468MQ to
Transparent Bridgingmode.
4. Keeping the Frontier eero as a Wired Access Point (Bridge Mode)
What if you are installing a prosumer wired firewall or multi-gig router (such as a Ubiquiti UniFi Cloud Gateway Max, Firewalla Gold Plus, or OPNsense appliance) at the ONT, and you still want to reuse the Frontier-supplied eero Pro 6E or eero Max 7 units for wireless coverage without causing Double NAT?
Never leave the eero in default Automatic (NAT) mode behind your primary router. Instead, wire the topology as Frontier ONT → Your Primary Router (WAN) → Primary Router (LAN) → Gateway eero, then open the eero mobile app and go to Settings → Network Settings → DHCP & NAT. Change the selection from Automatic to Bridge and tap Save (the eero network will reboot for 2 minutes). In Bridge Mode, your primary router handles all NAT, firewall rules, DNS, and DHCP leases while the eero units act as transparent WiFi 6E/7 mesh access points.

Frontier Fiber Third-Party Router Setup Checklist
- Located the Frontier ONT (Nokia FRX523, FOX222, or Calix 803G) or indoor FCA252 MoCA 2.5 adapter.
- Verified both FCA252 MoCA adapters (if used) have their physical slide switches set to 25GW (or LAN) and power-cycled them.
- Disconnected the Frontier eero or Arris NVG468MQ and plugged the ONT/MoCA Ethernet cable directly into your router's WAN port.
- Power-cycled the Frontier ONT for 60 seconds so the upstream BNG released the old router's MAC address lease.
- Configured the new router's WAN connection to Automatic / Dynamic IP (DHCP) with no VLAN tag and confirmed a public WAN IPv4.
- Verified full subscribed download and upload throughput (500M, 1G, 2G, or 5G) over a wired Ethernet test.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will Frontier charge me a fee if I unplug their eero router and use my own router?
No—you are completely free to unplug the Frontier-provided eero and connect your own router directly to the ONT. However, keep the Frontier eero stored safely in a closet (or return it and get a tracking receipt if ending service), because Frontier owns the promotional eero hardware and charges an unreturned equipment fee of $100 to $300 if you cancel service without returning it.
Why am I only getting 940 Mbps on my Frontier 2 Gig Fiber plan with my own router?
Getting 940 Mbps on a 2 Gig plan means a single 1GbE link is bottlenecking your connection. Make sure your router has BOTH a 2.5GbE (or 10GbE) WAN port and at least one 2.5GbE LAN port, and if your home uses Frontier FCA252 MoCA adapters, check that the physical switch on the side of both adapters is set to '25GW' or 'LAN' rather than '1GW'.
Does Frontier Fiber support Native IPv6 on third-party routers?
As of 2026, most residential Frontier Fiber markets operate as IPv4-only on the WAN (via Dynamic DHCPv4) without native DHCPv6 prefix delegation, though dual-stack IPv6 trials are rolling out in select regions. Leave IPv6 disabled or set to Native DHCPv6 without requiring an IPv6 lease for WAN connectivity.
What if I have Frontier Digital Voice home phone service—can I still ditch the Arris NVG468MQ?
Check where your home's RJ11 telephone cord is plugged in. On modern Nokia FRX523 and FOX222 XGS-PON installations, Frontier provisions voice directly on the ONT's 'POTS 1 / Phone 1' port, meaning you can remove the router completely. Only older installations where the green Phone jack on the back of the Arris NVG468MQ is active require keeping the Arris unit online.
